Virgin Atlantic partners with Boeing for high-speed Wi-Fi on 787 fleet

Boeing and Virgin Atlantic are teaming up to improve the internet experience for passengers onboard Virgin Atlantic’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The upgrades will bring high-speed, streaming-quality Wi-Fi to travelers, creating a better-connected and more enjoyable flying experience. The announcement of this partnership was made at MRO Europe on October 15, showcasing the commitment of both companies to enhancing customer satisfaction.

Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Customer and Operating Officer, Corneel Koster, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Boeing to introduce Starlink’s next-generation connectivity to their 787 fleet. This initiative aims to make flying with Virgin Atlantic feel like a ‘home away from home’ for every customer. By offering low latency, super high-speed Wi-Fi that rivals ground-based connections, passengers can stay connected and entertained while in the skies.

Boeing will be implementing modifications to install a new antenna fairing that can accommodate Electronically Steered Phased Array (ESA) antennas. This aerodynamic shroud, known as the Boeing Aerodynamic Shroud, will support Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and multi-orbit connectivity, paving the way for faster and more reliable internet access during flights.

Doug Backhus, Vice President of Cabin, Modifications, and Maintenance for Boeing Global Services, highlighted the rapid advancements in satellite and antenna technology. Boeing is proud to offer its engineering expertise and hardware to enable Virgin Atlantic to provide top-notch connectivity to their 787 Dreamliner fleet, ensuring passengers have a seamless online experience while in the air.
