The True Story Behind Hulu’s ‘Murdaugh: Death In The Family’ Series
Parker, Eltzroth, and Detrick, confronted him about the missing company funds amounting to nearly $792,000, as reported by CNN. That same evening, a tragic event unfolded when Alex called 911 to report finding his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, shot dead outside their home.
When authorities arrived at the scene, Alex claimed he was not present during the incident, stating that he had been visiting his ill mother before returning home to the devastating discovery. An investigation into the murders commenced.
In September of that year, after stepping down from PMPED due to allegations of misappropriated funds, Alex dialed 911 again, this time reporting that he had been shot. He was taken to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, where he received treatment for what was described as a “superficial gunshot wound to the head” by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. However, Alex’s legal team later argued that the injury was more severe than initially stated and pinned the blame on an unknown assailant.
Shortly following these events, an investigation was launched into Alex’s suspected misappropriation of funds by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
According to court documents, it was revealed that Alex orchestrated his own shooting as part of a plan to hire Curtis Edward Smith, a former client, to kill him so that his surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, could collect an insurance payout of approximately $10 million, details reported by NJ.com and CNN. Smith faced charges of assisted suicide, assault and battery, insurance fraud, and more.
Alex was ultimately convicted and is currently serving two consecutive life sentences for his involvement in a series of crimes, including murder and financial fraud.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family, featuring a talented cast including Jason Clarke, Patricia Arquette, Johnny Berchtold, and Brittany Snow, premieres its first three episodes on Hulu this Wednesday. Subsequent episodes will be released weekly until November 19th.
