Pitkin County 2026 Budget Proposal and Five-Year Plan
The Pitkin County Commissioners are getting down to business with their proposed 2026 budget and five-year plan. This financial strategy focuses on investing in critical infrastructure, supporting county employees, and maintaining strong fiscal reserves during uncertain economic times.
The proposed budget of $311 million represents a significant increase over the previous year, with major capital projects and one-time investments taking center stage. Revenues across all County funds are expected to rise by 29 percent, ending with a fund balance of around $167 million—equal to 91 percent of operating expenses. The General Fund budget is set at $61.8 million, an 11.6 percent increase from the year before, and is backed by a projected 9.6 percent revenue hike without any new taxes.
Key priorities for the 2026 budget include delivering the largest capital projects in County history, ensuring a skilled and stable workforce, and providing essential services in a changing economic landscape. These investments range from the hefty $575 million Airport Modernization Project to a $32 million expansion of the Solid Waste Center. Other projects in the pipeline include a new Dispatch Center, upgrades at Phillips Mobile Home Park, affordable housing support, and the electrification of County facilities.
Anticipating potential economic shifts in the next five years, the County is planning for various scenarios, including federal budget cuts, inflation, interest rate changes, and labor market fluctuations. A notable event on the horizon is the planned nine-month closure of the airport runway in 2027, which could impact local tourism and revenues. To counteract any funding reductions, the County is proposing a three-year stabilization pool to protect vital services and community partners.
Within the proposed budget, there’s a strong emphasis on competitive compensation, housing assistance, and professional development opportunities for County employees. These initiatives aim to attract and retain top talent while ensuring residents receive high-quality service.
The Board of County Commissioners will delve into the details of the proposed budget in upcoming meetings before final adoption on December 9. Dates to remember include presentations on new positions, capital requests, the District Attorney’s budget, Healthy Community Fund grant recommendations, and final budget discussions.
