Russell Simmons Sues HBO and Filmmakers Over Alleged Sexual Abuse Documentary

Music mogul Russell Simmons is taking legal action against HBO and the creators of a 2020 documentary that exposed allegations of sexual abuse against him. In the documentary, titled On The Record and directed by Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick, multiple women came forward with accusations of sexual assault by Simmons in the 1980s and 90s, during his time as the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, the iconic hip-hop label responsible for artists like LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys.

Simmons has vehemently denied all allegations and is seeking $20 million for defamation, claiming that the filmmakers ignored evidence provided by his representatives. According to his lawyer, Imran Ansari, despite substantial support for Simmons from credible sources and calls for further investigation, the filmmakers chose to release the documentary globally, damaging Simmons’ reputation with what he considers to be false accusations.

The documentary premiered to positive reviews at the Sundance film festival in January 2020 but faced a setback when producer Oprah Winfrey withdrew her support before the film’s release on Apple TV+. Despite Winfrey’s departure from the project, the filmmakers stood by their work, insisting that the allegations were thoroughly vetted by reputable news outlets prior to the documentary’s release.

Simmons and his legal team made efforts to halt the distribution of the documentary to no avail, even enlisting support from various luminaries in media, politics, and civil rights. This lawsuit is part of a broader trend in the music industry, with other high-profile figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Chris Brown facing similar legal battles over allegations of sexual misconduct featured in documentaries about their lives.

Simmons’ case is ongoing, with his legal team pushing for the immediate removal of the documentary from HBO’s platforms and seeking $20 million in damages. Despite the challenges he faces, Simmons remains steadfast in his denial of all allegations of sexual abuse.
