Fountain of Youth Film Review: Quick Decline in Excitement
“Fountain of Youth,” now available for streaming on Apple TV+, is an archaeological adventure tale where a family comes together to uncover a hidden wonder with possible magical properties. Their journey takes them across Europe and into the desert, where they face various challenges, including riddles and betrayals.
If this storyline sounds familiar, it’s because it resembles the plot of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” a much-loved classic that outshines this new film. While “Fountain of Youth” has its positives, like performances by Natalie Portman and Domhnall Gleeson, as well as intriguing musical puzzles, it falls short in comparison.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, known for his work on action films like “Sherlock Holmes,” the movie offers entertaining action sequences, but the dialogue and character development lack depth. Despite my enthusiasm for action-adventure and historical mysteries, this film’s characters feel underdeveloped, particularly the lead played by John Krasinski, and the plot becomes predictably stale.
Although I appreciate the visually striking set piece featuring the Lusitania, this movie ultimately failed to captivate me. While I typically enjoy this genre, “Fountain of Youth” left me wishing I had spent my time revisiting the thrill of watching Indiana Jones embark on his quest for the Holy Grail.
