Warner Bros. Discovery Split: HBO Returns to Max

For a while, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to drop the “HBO” from HBO Max, but now it’s back. The streaming service has revamped its app to welcome the return of HBO Max. This change might be a hint that Warner Bros. Discovery is heading towards a split of its assets.

After a report by CNBC’s David Faber following Warner Bros. Discovery’s March-quarter earnings, it seems like WBD might be moving towards a division. While Warner Bros. Discovery didn’t comment on Faber’s report, it seems like the split could involve pairing WB studios with Max and spinning off the Discovery linear cable channels into a new company.

The formation of Warner Bros. Discovery in April 2022, as a merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc., could lead to this split. It makes sense to pair WB studios with Max and separate the Discovery channels. One potential issue is that HBO Max and Discovery+ have a lot of the same programming. How will they handle this? Maybe by reattaching Max to the HBO brand and making changes to Discovery later on.

Although this split isn’t official yet, it seems like it could happen soon. At Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent upfront event, HBO chief Casey Bloys announced that HBO Max is back and better than ever. Stay tuned to see how this potential split unfolds!
