Max reverts to HBO Max: What you need to know

Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that its streaming service is getting a name change—again! This will be the second time in three years, if you’re keeping track. Originally known as HBO Max from 2018 to 2022, then as Max from 2022 to 2025, it’s going back to its roots as HBO Max.

The rebrand is set to happen this summer as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to increase global subscribers. By bringing back the HBO branding, the company hopes to emphasize the high-quality content subscribers can enjoy. According to the company’s statement, customers are looking for better content, not just more, which influenced this decision.

David Zaslav, bullish on the HBO brand, highlighted the importance of quality programming in the streaming service’s growth. The return of HBO to the name is seen as a way to further boost that growth in the future.

In its recent earnings report, Warner Bros. Discovery mentioned the Max platform multiple times, indicating its significance in driving subscriber and profitability milestones. The company views HBO Max as a key element for future growth, especially after the merger with Discovery, Inc. in 2022.

As long as they keep delivering great shows like “White Lotus,” the name change won’t matter much to fans.
