Natalia Grace Barnett Family Case in Lafayette Inspires New Hulu Series

A brand-new TV series on Hulu called “Good American Family” is grabbing viewers’ attention with its inspiration from a headline-making case involving the Barnett family and their adopted daughter Natalia Grace in Lafayette.

If you ask around Downtown Lafayette, you might be surprised at how few people have heard of the show or know much about the fascinating Natalia Grace case. Here’s a quick recap of the Barnett family story: Kristine and Michael Barnett welcomed Natalia Grace into their family in 2010, adopting her from Ukraine. Natalia, who has a rare form of dwarfism, quickly became part of the family. However, suspicions arose that Natalia might be older than initially believed. The Barnetts made shocking claims that their adopted daughter was actually a 22-year-old with malicious intentions toward them. This was later found to be untrue.

Reports mention an incident where Natalia was allegedly left alone in an apartment on North 11th Street by her adoptive parents, marking the second time they supposedly abandoned her for an extended period. In 2022, Michael Barnett was acquitted of any wrongdoing, while Kristine spent some time behind bars until her case was eventually dismissed due to lack of evidence.

Hulu has released two episodes of “Good American Family” so far, with new ones hitting the streaming platform every Wednesday. For those eager to dive deeper into this intriguing true story, check out the trailer for the series.
