WWII film “Blitz” explores depth and insight through boy’s journey
I had the pleasure of watching “Blitz” at the Mill Valley Film Festival last October. This film, produced by Apple Original Films, had a limited theatrical release for Oscar qualification, but you can now stream it with an Apple TV+ subscription.
“Blitz” is a beautiful and moving story that follows the journeys of a young boy evacuated from London during WWII and his single mother, played by Saoirse Ronan. The film delves into the boy’s biracial identity and his quest to find his way home despite the dangers of the German bombings.
Directed by Academy Award winner Steve McQueen, the film offers a unique perspective on young George’s journey. While the trailers may have hinted at a grand adventure, the actual story is a quieter and more intimate one. George’s 48-hour journey across London is a testament to his bravery amidst air raids and chaos.
Saoirse Ronan delivers an exceptional performance as Rita, George’s mother, showcasing strength, vulnerability, and resilience in the face of fear. The film’s practical sets are also noteworthy, depicting a war-torn landscape with authenticity.
Overall, “Blitz” is a captivating and well-crafted film that is definitely worth watching, especially if you’re interested in WWII stories. Anderson Templeton, a member of the Argus-Courier Screen Team and a film enthusiast, highly recommends it.
