2024 Sweethearts Movie Review and Summary
When college rolls around, one of the toughest decisions for young lovebirds is whether to stick with their high school sweetheart or call it quits. Ben and Jamie, in “Sweethearts,” find themselves in a bind with long-distance relationships that are more trouble than they’re worth. Ben is juggling a high school girlfriend and Jamie’s dating a Harvard football star, and things are starting to get complicated. Add in their buddy Palmer, who’s helping them navigate the breakup waters, and you’ve got a recipe for some rom-com chaos.
Unfortunately, the film has its ups and downs. Ben and Jamie’s dynamic feels a bit forced at times, and their love interests come off as stereotypical villains. While some comedic moments land, others fall flat. However, the film does shine in exploring the challenges of moving back to a small town and the pressures of finding belonging in a big city.
Despite its flaws, “Sweethearts” has its share of heartwarming moments and surprises. The film kicks off with an animated sequence that sets the stage for a bumpy first semester, full of awkward encounters and unexpected twists. While it may not be a holiday classic, “Sweethearts” delivers a fresh take on the rom-com ending that will leave you satisfied.
Catch “Sweethearts” on Max starting November 28th for a quirky, feel-good watch.
