Tomb Raider Anime Set to Debut in October with Fresh Trailer and Story Reveals

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is set to premiere on Netflix on October 10, marking the arrival of a new anime featuring the iconic gaming character. The release date was officially announced, accompanied by a fresh trailer showcasing Lara Croft in action and posing the question, “Ms. Croft, how much longer can you persevere?”

In addition to the trailer debut, Netflix shared initial plot details, confirming that the storyline will unfold after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The narrative follows Lara Croft as she embarks on solo adventures, only to return home when a valuable Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with a personal connection. This sets her on a global quest that leads her to forgotten tombs, where she must confront her true self and define the hero she aspires to be.

Crystal Dynamics hinted that the anime will aim to merge the timelines of the original Core Design games with the reboot trilogy. The project has been in the works at Netflix since around 2021, with Hayley Atwell taking on the role of Lara Croft and Earl Baylon reprising his character Jonah Maiava. Tasha Huo, known for her work on The Witcher: Blood Origin, is the writer and producer of the series.

Outside of Legend of Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider franchise has various projects in development, including a new game and a live-action series on Prime Video penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridges. While the franchise has been relatively quiet recently, with the exception of a remastered collection, Legend of Lara Croft joins Netflix’s lineup of acclaimed animated series like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Blue Eye Samurai.
