Celebrities Unite to Invest in Auckland Film and TV Studio

Actors Cliff Curtis and Jason Momoa, alongside director Taika Waititi, are bringing positive changes to Auckland’s film scene by acquiring Studio West. This studio, originally founded in 1997 and previously owned by Kay and Glenn Howe of Enki Enterprises, has now been handed over to the Āriki Group to foster more jobs and Polynesian storytelling in New Zealand.

During an interview with RNZ’s Sunday Morning, Taika Waititi shared his vision for the studio, emphasizing a focus on nurturing local talent and revitalizing the film industry. The goal is to create more opportunities for aspiring filmmakers and actors, especially the younger generation who may have faced challenges in entering the industry.

The recent work at Studio West includes Jason Momoa’s series “Chief of War” for Apple TV+, highlighting the studio’s significant role in supporting engaging projects. Momoa expressed his excitement about contributing to the thriving creative community in New Zealand, emphasizing the importance of sharing meaningful stories with a global audience.

Cliff Curtis, who also starred in “Chief of War,” reflected on his journey in the industry and the importance of empowering local artists. The trio of Curtis, Momoa, and Waititi is dedicated to promoting authentic storytelling, creative control, and fostering economic stability within their communities.

Taika Waititi, known for his acclaimed film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, reminiscing about the magical moments during the production. He shared insights about his filmmaking journey, including adapting to receiving notes and feedback from studios, a process he found both challenging and enlightening.

Looking ahead, Waititi is set to direct a film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “James” by American writer Percival Everett, in collaboration with Steven Spielberg’s production company. Despite apprehensions about delving into a different cultural context, he expressed confidence in approaching the project with respect and sensitivity.

The acquisition of Studio West by this talented group of actors and directors marks a new chapter in New Zealand’s film landscape, promising diversified storytelling, increased opportunities, and a stronger sense of community within the industry.
