This highly anticipated episode is set to premiere on Netflix on April 7, 2026. Originally scheduled for 2025, Chess Mates is part of Volume 4 of the Untold series, known for exploring captivating sports stories.

The episode delves into what is considered one of the most explosive controversies in modern chess history. It all started with Niemann’s controversial victory over Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, sparking allegations and revelations of cheating. To clear his name, Niemann fights his way back to the top, leading to a high-stakes rematch with Carlsen in 2024.

While details on the documentary are still scarce, filming took place during significant chess events like the 2024 Speed Chess Championship Finals in Paris, the 2024 Champions Chess Tour Finals in Toronto, and the 2024 FIDE World Blitz Championship in New York. Even Carlsen’s wedding in Oslo in January 2025 was documented by the Netflix crew.
