Is BBC Considering Allowing Americans to Fund ‘Doctor Who’ Once More?
Doctor Who is always looking to the future, especially with the upcoming Christmas special that Russell T. Davies is hard at work on. However, the show is still feeling the effects of its split with Disney, like the delayed release of the spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea on Disney+. But fear not, the BBC is staying true to the Time Lord and isn’t ruling out new partnerships to help cover costs, even with American companies.
Despite the failed Disney partnership, the BBC remains dedicated to Doctor Who, as emphasized by Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s Director of Drama. In an interview with Deadline, Salt discussed the uncertainties surrounding the show’s long-term funding and the upcoming Christmas special. She stressed the importance of handling the show’s future in the right way to ensure its legacy continues.
With the departure of Disney, there may be budget cuts on the horizon, but Salt expressed confidence in the industry’s ability to adapt to different budget levels. Salt also hinted at the possibility of exploring new American partnerships for Doctor Who, with HBO Max in the UK presenting an intriguing opportunity.
Although the future is uncertain, Salt remains optimistic, stating, “We’ll wait and see how we figure it out. HBO have been great partners creatively.” With the landscape of streaming services constantly changing, the future of Doctor Who remains full of possibilities.
