DGA Awards Winners: Live Updates

The Directors Guild of America Awards for 2026 celebrated outstanding film, TV, and commercial directors. Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, the night promised to honor the best in the business. Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Guillermo Del Toro, Josh Safdie, and Chloé Zhao were all in the running for the top award of outstanding directorial achievement in theatrical feature film. This award is often a big indicator of who might take home the best director prize at the Oscars, so the stakes were high. However, Sentimental Value‘s Joachim Trier was nominated at the Oscars instead of Del Toro. In the end, Anderson was the winner, giving an emotional speech that paid tribute to a fallen colleague, Adam Somner, who passed away in 2024. The event also recognized first-time feature filmmakers, honored TV categories, and presented special awards to David Charles and Gregory McCollum. Christopher Nolan, the new DGA president, presided over the show, starting the night with some words of wisdom for all the filmmakers in the room. Nanjiani, in his hosting duties, jokingly thanked Nolan for “opening” for him, setting the tone for an eventful and memorable night.
