BCNegra Awards Mick Herron with Pepe Carvalho Prize

British author Mick Herron was recently honored with Barcelona’s prestigious Pepe Carvalho Prize at the BCNegra festival. Known for his acclaimed works such as ‘The Secret Hours’ and the ‘Slough House’ series, which has been adapted into the popular Apple TV+ show ‘Slow Horses’ starring Gary Oldman, Herron has made a significant impact on the crime novel, thriller, and espionage fiction genres.

During the award ceremony, Herron expressed his passion for writing about people, stating that characters are at the heart of his storytelling. He shared, “The plot is just an excuse to write about people, to see how they feel, how they think… and often to focus on people who have been marginalized.”

Previous recipients of the Pepe Carvalho Prize include renowned authors like Jo Nesbø, Andrea Camilleri, Yasmina Khadra, and Claudia Piñeiro, making Herron’s recognition even more esteemed. Grateful for the honor, Herron admitted, “I’ve come to BCNegra several times and never thought I’d be here to receive this award. I feel thrilled beyond measure.”

Looking to the future, Herron remains committed to the genre, although unsure of what his next book will entail. The BCNegra festival, which runs from February 2 to 8 at various locations throughout Barcelona, continues to celebrate and showcase the best in crime and thriller fiction.
