Netflix CEO questioned in Senate hearing on trans content for children
In a recent fiery Senate hearing about Netflix’s potential deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment, Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., took CEO Ted Sarandos to task over content promoting transgenderism on the platform. The senator cited concerns from a conservative women’s policy organization, claiming that nearly half of Netflix’s children’s shows push “transgender ideology.”
Hawley, a parent himself, expressed apprehension about his children viewing content on Netflix without his prior approval, questioning the platform’s motives. Sarandos quickly defended Netflix, stating that the statistics mentioned were inaccurate and that Netflix doesn’t push any political agenda.
The exchange heated up as Hawley pressed Sarandos further, questioning the presence of trans characters, storylines, and themes in Netflix’s programming. Sarandos emphasized that they offer a diverse range of content to cater to various tastes.
The back-and-forth continued, with Hawley maintaining his stance based on the statistics shared by Concerned Women for America. Despite the accusations, Sarandos reassured the senator that Netflix provides parents with tools to manage their children’s viewing choices and understands the shared concerns about raising kids.
The discussion coincided with Netflix’s recent acquisition deal with Warner Bros., HBO, and HBO Max, positioning the streaming giant as a major player in the entertainment industry. The debate highlighted broader questions about content regulation and parental control in the streaming landscape.
