Napster Stops Music Streaming Service in Favor of AI Assistants
Napster, a famously known music streaming platform, has made a sudden shift to focus on AI-powered assistants and digital personas. Originally a P2P file-sharing service, then a music streaming service, Napster has now taken a significant turn.
Digital Music News reported that users received an unexpected splash screen message while using Napster, revealing the shift from a music streaming service to an AI platform for creating and experiencing music in new ways. Users were directed to TuneMyMusic to transfer their playlists if they choose to switch to another music streaming service. This move, though sudden, was not entirely surprising – back in March 2025, Napster was bought out by AI company Infinite Reality for $207 million.
Napster has now ventured into providing AI assistant solutions, collaborating with Comex (PPG) Group to create an AI companion named Sofia. Their AI services are powered by Napster View, focusing on aiding customers with creative ideas and suggestions. Additionally, Napster now offers digital personas, animated chatbots, that interact with users through a webcam. These digital personas are designed to assist users with tasks like interviews, presentations, and project work.
Napster CTO, Edo Segal, expressed optimism about the company’s move, stating that AI is opening up new opportunities for everyone to become creators, not just content consumers. While the company’s turn towards AI has the potential to be groundbreaking, only time will tell. There are still pending royalty payments to be addressed, with Sony Music and SoundExchange having lawsuits against Napster for alleged missing payments. Despite the shift away from music streaming, Napster’s transition to AI looks set to make waves in the world of digital entertainment.
