International Film Festival in Town to Commemorate Eric Morecambe’s 100th Birthday

The upcoming year marks a significant milestone in honoring the comedic legacy of Eric Morecambe, with plans underway to celebrate his centenary at the Bay International Film Festival. Set to kick off on January 23, the festival, founded three years ago in Morecambe, aims to make film accessible to all, showcasing emerging talent from the north alongside community audiences.

Daragh Carville, known for his work on ITV’s crime drama The Bay, will serve as the festival’s patron, adding to the excitement of the grand opening gala screening. The festival is set to highlight northern filmmakers through various workshops, screenings, and awards ceremonies, bringing together creativity and talent from the region.

One of the festival’s highlights includes a guerilla filmmaking workshop with the accomplished director and screenwriter, Chris Jones, offering aspiring filmmakers valuable insights into the industry. With an official selection of 72 short films submitted from 47 countries, festival-goers can look forward to themed screenings and the introduction of a new award for the Best Local Community Film, aimed at encouraging grassroots storytelling. A Family Day event will also engage young filmmakers in workshops and screenings, emphasizing mental health representation on screen as part of this year’s theme.
