Sony Acquires Majority Stake in ‘Peanuts’ IP for $460 Million
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment Japan recently purchased a majority stake in Peanuts Holding LLC for about $460 million. This deal means that the beloved characters created by Charles M. Schulz, like Charlie Brown and Snoopy, will now be under the Sony umbrella.
WildBrain, a Canadian kids and family entertainment company, previously owned around 41 percent of the stake, which has now been acquired by Sony. As a result, Sony now holds about 80 percent of Peanuts Holdings, while the Schulz family retains the remaining 20 percent.
Shunsuke Muramatsu, the president and group CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating that Peanuts is an iconic brand with a rich history of entertaining audiences worldwide for 75 years. Sony is proud to be a part of this partnership and looks forward to further elevating the value of the Peanuts brand.
