Fashion erases HIV stigma on Hulu: Watch now

Fashion has always been a powerful tool for storytelling, but a groundbreaking Hulu special called HIV Unwrapped is taking it to a whole new level. This special brings together design students from Parsons School of Design and HIV researchers to create wearable art that challenges misconceptions about HIV and AIDS.

Executive producer Karl Schmid of HIV Unwrapped and +Life Media explained the vision behind this unique collaboration. While science and fashion might seem like an unlikely pair, this project shows that they can intersect in surprisingly meaningful ways, sparking transformative conversations.

Before landing on Hulu, HIV Unwrapped was successful in Australia, England, and Rwanda. This global mission now comes to New York City, marking a significant milestone. The project goes beyond HIV awareness, emphasizing the value of dialogue between people from different backgrounds and disciplines.

Shreya Jani from Gilead Sciences spoke about fashion’s ability to communicate complex ideas in accessible ways. Fashion serves as a gateway to understanding important messages about HIV awareness and prevention, reminding people of the ongoing importance of ending HIV transmission.

HIV Unwrapped takes viewers behind the scenes of the collaborative process, showing how each garment evolved from concept to finished piece. The special captures the challenges and breakthroughs as designers and scientists learn to communicate across their professional languages.

Bianca Ordoñez, a project participant, highlighted the importance of showcasing the diverse experiences of people living with HIV. By participating in HIV Unwrapped, she aims to show that HIV status doesn’t define a person’s worth or potential for achievement.

This special is more than just a fashion show – it’s a strategic approach to public health communication. By embedding vital information about HIV in an entertaining and artistic context, HIV Unwrapped reaches audiences who might tune out traditional medical messaging.

HIV Unwrapped began streaming on Hulu on November 30 and aired on December 1 through the ABC Owned Television Stations’ Localish Network. This timing ensures maximum impact during World AIDS Day observances, expanding its reach to additional viewers.
