Netflix’s ‘The Beast In Me’ Ending: A Disappointing Cop-Out

I’ve been really caught up in the new Netflix show, The Beast in Me, starring Claire Danes as an author diving into the mysterious world of Matthew Rhys’ character. It’s full of twists, turns, and plenty of deceit and death. But I have to admit, I was a bit let down by the ending. Spoilers ahead!

At the end of The Beast in Me, we see Claire Danes’ character, Aggie, in a tough spot. Niles Jarvis, played by Matthew Rhys, somehow frames her for a crime she didn’t commit. The evidence against him is slim, and it seems like Aggie is stuck. How will she prove her innocence? How will Niles finally get caught? It sets the stage for what could have been an epic finale.

Unfortunately, the resolution of the show falls into a cliché murder mystery trope. Aggie manages to manipulate Niles’ wife, portrayed by Brittany Snow, into believing that he’s a murderer. The setup for this reveal felt rushed and not very convincing, especially after recent plot developments. It’s disappointing when such a promising mystery relies on a tired storytelling device.

The climax of the show revolves around Nina recording Niles confessing to a litany of crimes, including the murder Aggie was falsely accused of. This pivotal moment falls flat when it’s revealed that Nina recorded the whole thing without Niles realizing. It’s a classic case of the villain unknowingly revealing everything, and it’s a letdown for what could have been a much more clever finale.

In addition to the lackluster resolution, other loose ends of the show aren’t tied up neatly. While Niles faces consequences for his actions, some plot points, like the murder of Brian Abbott, are left unresolved. It’s frustrating when a show with so much potential doesn’t deliver a satisfying conclusion.

Overall, The Beast in Me kept me engaged throughout, but it stumbled in its final moments. It could have been a standout mystery series, but it fell short with a cliché ending. Here’s hoping future seasons find more creative ways to unravel their mysteries.
