Netflix confirms Luther film sequel with Idris Elba and fan-favorite character

Former DCI John Luther, portrayed by the iconic Idris Elba, is gearing up to make his return to our screens in an all-new film produced by Netflix. The popular Luther television series, which aired on the BBC from 2010 to 2019 for five successful seasons, was followed by a feature-length film titled The Fallen Sun in 2023, distributed on Netflix and in select cinemas. This upcoming film will see Luther, last seen joining forces with MI5 after a daring escape from prison in the previous installment, dive into a fresh case with some familiar faces by his side.

One of the most exciting developments for die-hard Luther fans is the return of Ruth Wilson as Luther’s nemesis and occasional love interest, Alice Morgan. Last seen in the fifth season finale allegedly plummeting to her demise, Alice’s reappearance raises questions about her fate and the potential dangers lurking in Luther’s path.

Additionally, Dermot Crowley will reprise his role as Martin Schenk, last seen as a retired ally of Luther in The Fallen Sun. While Cynthia Erivo, who portrayed Odette Raine, the head of the Serious and Serial Crime Unit (SSCU), will not be returning for this film.

Series creator Neil Cross will once again script the project, with Jamie Payne returning to direct. Cross emphasized the personal connection he holds with the characters of Luther, Alice, and Schenk, referring to them as family. He teased an intense storyline for the film, with Luther navigating through a series of brutal murders while evading various threats.

Production for Luther’s next adventure is scheduled to commence in February 2026, although an official release date has not been announced. In the meantime, Luther: The Fallen Sun is currently available for streaming on Netflix. So, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more updates on this highly-anticipated return to our screens.
