Is Netflix’s Wayward Based on a True Story? The Dark Inspiration Behind Tall Pines
Netflix’s newest thriller, “Wayward,” created by the talented Mae Martin, takes viewers on a gripping journey to Tall Pines, a town harboring dark secrets within its local school for troubled teens. But is this eerie series based on a true story? Let’s find out!
In this intense eight-episode limited series, Martin not only stars as the lead but also wears the hats of creator, co-showrunner, and executive producer. Set in 2003, Martin plays Alex Dempsey, a police officer who, along with his pregnant wife Laura, uncovers disturbing practices at a local “troubled teens” school. As Alex delves deeper, he suspects the school’s enigmatic leader, Evelyn Wade (portrayed by Toni Collette), of hiding sinister secrets beneath a guise of “self-reflection.”
Aside from Martin and Collette, the show features Sydney Topliffe as Laura Redman, Alyvia Alyn Lind and Eliza Topliffe as Leila and Abbie, and other talented actors like Patrick J. Adams and Tattiawna Jones.
“Wayward” has quickly risen to the No. 2 spot on Netflix’s TV streaming chart and boasts a 77% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes just a day after its release. And while Tall Pines Academy is a fictional place, and the story isn’t based on true events, Martin’s own experiences growing up inspired the series.
Martin’s best friend, Nicole, who attended a similar institution during her teenage years, provided the initial spark for the show. As Martin delved into the “troubled teen” industry and drew inspiration from horror/crime films like “Girl, Interrupted” and “Get Out,” the idea for “Wayward” took shape.
The series also draws from the religious movement Synanon, known for its controversial practices like the “Synanon game,” where participants engaged in confrontational therapy. Martin’s research into this movement added depth to the show’s narrative and created a thrilling atmosphere for viewers.
So, while “Wayward” isn’t a true story, it takes inspiration from real-life events, personal experiences, and a dose of creative storytelling to captivate audiences with its chilling tale of mystery and intrigue. Get ready to be hooked from the first episode as the secrets of Tall Pines unfold on screen!
