Netflix Series: The ’90s Philly Mob War Between Joey Merlino and John Stanfa
Hey there, folks! Exciting news for all you crime buffs out there – Netflix is gearing up to release a new series that delves into the intense Philly mob war of the 1990s. Titled “Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia,” this gripping show unpacks the power struggle between veteran crime boss John Stanfa, chosen by the notorious Five Families, and young upstart Joey Merlino, leader of the Young Turks.
The tension between these two factions reached a boiling point after the arrest of mafioso Nicky Scarfo in 1986. Things turned violent in 1993 when Stanfa’s crew shot Merlino, killed his capo Michael Ciancaglini, and launched a retaliatory attack that injured Stanfa’s son. The conflict finally came to an end with the arrests of both crime bosses.
Today, Joey Merlino, who denies any Mafia connections, hosts a podcast and runs Skinny Joey’s Cheesesteaks, while Stanfa serves a life sentence at FCI Danbury in Connecticut. “Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia” features insightful interviews with former mobsters, investigators, and journalists, alongside wiretap recordings and surveillance footage to bring the story to life.
Mark your calendars for the premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 22. For a sneak peek, check out the trailer below. Stay tuned for this thrilling series chronicling a dark chapter in Philly’s mob history!
