Marvel star announces Disney boycott over Jimmy Kimmel suspension
Marvel star Tatiana Maslany has called for fans to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions following Jimmy Kimmel’s indefinite suspension from ABC. The network, which is owned by Disney, announced the end of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host made controversial remarks regarding the identity of Tyler Robinson, the suspected gunman in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Maslany, known for her role in Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, posted a photo of herself on the set of the Marvel series with a message urging people to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions. Damon Lindelof, creator of Lost, also expressed plans to boycott the company, describing Kimmel as “empathetic and grateful.”
Several other celebrities, including Amy Landecker, Frances Fisher, Ben Stiller, Wanda Sykes, and Kathy Griffin, have spoken out against the decision to suspend Kimmel. Jean Smart, who recently won an Emmy award, criticized the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, emphasizing that Kimmel’s comments were an exercise of free speech, not hate speech.
The remarks that led to Kimmel’s suspension were made during a recent episode where he criticized the characterization of the shooting of Charlie Kirk by a Maga supporter. Donald Trump celebrated the news of Kimmel’s show being canceled, commending the decision.
The controversy surrounding Kimmel’s comments prompted Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest owners of television stations in the US, to stop airing his show. The Trump-appointed chair of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, condemned Kimmel’s words as “truly sick” and suggested that ABC, Disney, and Kimmel could be held accountable for the comments.
In light of these developments, many in the entertainment industry have taken a stand in support of Jimmy Kimmel, highlighting the importance of freedom of speech and expressing disappointment in the decision to suspend his show.
