Spotify Now Offers Lossless Streaming to Premium Subscribers

The moment that Spotify users have been eagerly awaiting has finally arrived: lossless streaming is now available to Premium subscribers in select markets. This long-awaited feature, first promised in 2021, allows users to stream tracks in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format.

To access Spotify’s Lossless feature, Premium subscribers can now enjoy “nearly every song” in the catalogue in high quality audio on their mobile, desktop, tablet, and some third-party devices that support Spotify Connect. This feature is available at no additional cost.

Setting up lossless audio on Spotify is simple. Users just need to tap their profile icon in the top-left corner of the app, navigate to Settings & Privacy, and select Media Quality. From there, you can choose to enable the feature on Wi-Fi, cellular connections, or only downloaded audio, and select from quality levels like Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless.

It’s important to note that if you’re using Bluetooth-enabled devices like speakers or headphones, you won’t be able to experience Spotify’s highest level of audio quality. Spotify recommends streaming lossless music on Wi-Fi using wired headphones or speakers for the best experience.

The rollout of Spotify Lossless will be available to Premium subscribers in a variety of markets over the coming weeks, with plans to expand to more than 50 additional markets in October. This release addresses a common user complaint about Spotify lagging behind rivals like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and TIDAL, who have offered lossless audio for some time.

Spotify’s Vice President of Subscriptions, Gustav Gyllenhammar, expressed excitement about the rollout, saying, “The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers.” This news comes amidst some artists pulling their music from Spotify, citing concerns over the company’s CEO’s investments in military defense technology.
