Emmy Wins for Disability-Focused Shows

Two shows focusing on people with disabilities and their experiences in romantic relationships have won big at the Emmys this year!

First up, the Netflix series “Love on the Spectrum” scored two Emmys—one for outstanding unstructured reality program and the other for casting. This show follows adults with autism navigating the world of dating. It’s a hit!

Then, we have the documentary “Patrice: The Movie,” which received an Emmy for exceptional documentary filmmaking. The film, which premiered on Hulu, tells the story of Patrice Jetter, who wants to marry her partner. However, they both have disabilities, and tying the knot could put their Social Security and Medicaid benefits at risk.

These groundbreaking works were honored at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles over the weekend. The presenters included Marlee Matlin and Nyle DiMarco, both trailblazers in the disability community.

“Love on the Spectrum” has already snagged five Emmys in the past, making its mark as a powerful and important series. Created with the goal of telling real stories with dignity and respect, the show explores autism and relationships in a thoughtful and insightful way.

For those who missed the event, not to worry! An edited broadcast of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be airing this Saturday at 8 p.m. PT on FXX and streaming on Hulu until October 7th.

It’s inspiring to see these stories receive such recognition and we can’t wait to see what other amazing shows and films about the diverse experiences of people with disabilities will come next!
