Jason Momoa’s ‘Chief of War’: Honoring Hawaiian History on Apple TV+

Jason Momoa is bringing a slice of Hawaiian history to the screen with his passion project, the epic historical drama “Chief of War,” streaming on Apple TV+ starting August 1. Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman, plays the 18th-century war chief Ka’iana in the series, which he also created, produced, directed, and wrote.

During filming in Oahu, Momoa shared a powerful moment when the volcanoes erupted in the background during a battle scene, emphasizing a connection to his Hawaiian ancestors. This unique experience added an extra layer of authenticity to the series, set in the 1700s, showcasing Hawaiian culture through action, romance, and palace intrigue as Ka’iana fights to unite the islands against colonization.

To enhance the realism of the show, Momoa decided to shoot it in the native Hawaiian language, a decision that presented challenges for the cast. Temuera Morrison, who plays the fierce King Kahekili, admitted to initial fears about the language but appreciated the effort to get it right. Even Momoa himself faced difficulties with the language, finding it harder than battling attackers in intense fight scenes for the show.

One of the unique aspects of “Chief of War” is the casting of newcomer Kaina Makua, a farmer and Hawaiian studies teacher, as King Kamehameha. Makua’s familiarity with the language and culture brought an authentic perspective to his role, adding depth to the storytelling.

“Chief of War” offers a compelling insight into Hawaiian history and culture, with a talented cast led by Jason Momoa. The series promises to be a captivating experience, blending history, action, and drama for viewers to enjoy starting August 1 on Apple TV+.
