George Lucas to preview new museum at Comic-Con Media Event

George Lucas got a hero’s welcome at Comic-Con, where he finally made his debut appearance at the iconic event. The crowd erupted in applause, many holding up light sabers, as the legendary filmmaker made his way to the stage. Looking casual in jeans and a flannel shirt, the 81-year-old seemed humbled by all the attention.

The discussion that followed was a far cry from the typical sci-fi and superhero spectacle that dominates Comic-Con. Lucas shared his passion for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a project he’s been working on with his wife, Mellody Hobson. The museum, set to open in Los Angeles next year, is described by Lucas as “a temple to the people’s art.”

Designed to resemble a giant space cruiser, the museum will house an impressive collection of art and artifacts. While “Star Wars” pieces will be prominently featured, Lucas is equally dedicated to showcasing comic art and populist paintings. His personal collection includes works by artists like Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish, while Hobson focuses on Black painters like Norman Lewis and Kara Walker.

Joining Lucas on stage were director Guillermo del Toro and production designer Doug Chiang, both of whom have ties to the “Star Wars” universe. The panel was moderated by the multi-talented Queen Latifah, who added an extra layer of excitement to the discussion.

Lucas shared that his passion for collecting art dates back to his college years in the 1960s, where he discovered the affordability of original comic book drawings. Over the years, he’s amassed a diverse collection that includes everything from political cartoons to film artwork.

The Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year served as a wake-up call for del Toro, prompting him to consider moving his own collection to the museum for safekeeping. Emphasizing the political importance of comics throughout history, del Toro highlighted their role in standing up to oppressive forces.

The conversation at Comic-Con was a departure from the usual blockbuster film announcements, but it resonated with the core spirit of the event. Lucas, a true pioneer in the world of pop culture, continues to inspire generations with his work.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art promises to be a significant addition to Los Angeles’ cultural landscape, standing alongside major museums and institutions. While an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed, anticipation is already building for this exciting new venture.
