One Night in Idaho: The College Murders Review

The tragic murder of four University of Idaho students in November 2022 captivated a nation and sparked numerous documentaries. When I heard about Prime Video’s “One Night in Idaho: The College Murders,” I expected a typical true crime series. However, what I found when I watched it through my Amazon subscription was far more than I anticipated.

Unlike other documentaries that focus on the investigation, “One Night in Idaho” takes a different approach. Due to a gag order, the investigators couldn’t speak about the case. Instead, the series highlights how the crimes affected the victims’ loved ones. This personal touch creates a more emotional and raw narrative as friends and family share their experiences.

In a similar vein to the acclaimed “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” this docuseries transcends the typical true crime genre. By portraying Kaylee, Madison, Xana, and Ethan as more than just victims, the series honors their lives beyond the tragedy. It gives viewers a deeper understanding of who they were and what they meant to those around them.

Watching “One Night in Idaho” broke me in ways I didn’t expect. The interviews with the victims’ families, like Ethan’s mother Stacy recalling a poignant moment at parents’ weekend, really hit home. These heartbreaking stories stay with you long after the series ends, showcasing the lasting impact of such senseless violence.
