Ncuti Gatwa Leaves Doctor Who Due to Mental and Emotional Toll

Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in Doctor Who, recently shared that he decided to leave the show because it was getting pretty tough on him physically and emotionally. The 32-year-old actor bid farewell to the BBC sci-fi series earlier this year after wrapping up his second season in the role. In his final episode, which aired on May 31, Gatwa’s Doctor went through a regeneration and seemed to be replaced by former Doctor Who star Billie Piper.

During an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Gatwa candidly confessed: “I’m getting old, and my body was tired… and I’ve now just started doing some ballet, so I’m making really great decisions.” He went on to say, “It’s the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of, and because it’s so good, it’s strenuous. It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally, and so it was time.”

When asked if he would consider returning to the show in the future, Gatwa left the door open by saying, “Never say never.” He has been playing the Doctor since David Tennant’s second stint as the Time Lord bi-generated in 2023.

Gatwa also addressed his decision to step back from being the UK’s spokesperson at the Eurovision Song Contest in May. There were rumors that his choice was linked to issues surrounding Israel’s participation in the competition. However, Gatwa clarified, “I was just very busy.” He explained his busy schedule, citing a lot of work commitments and press related to The Roses and Doctor Who.

The actor also discussed his upcoming project, the West End premiere of Born With Teeth, where he plays Marlowe alongside his Sex Education co-star Edward Bluemel as Shakespeare. The production by the Royal Shakespeare Company will be staged at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre starting in August.

It’s exciting to see Gatwa explore new opportunities and bring fresh stories to the stage. If you’re a fan of his work, stay tuned for more updates on his upcoming projects.
