Boys Stunts Season 4: Fight Scenes Talk with Erik Kripke and Coordinator

Stunt coordinator John Koyama has a unique way of planning out fight scenes for The Boys—he uses cardboard! He shoots a previsualization of the chaos that’s going to unfold using cardboard boxes and props. In fact, in one scene, a Tim Hortons coffee container became a machine gun. Showrunner Eric Kripke found this process so amusing that it was written into an episode of the show, with the supes rehearsing a scene alongside Koyama himself.

Koyama appreciates Kripke’s homage to the stunt department and the mutual respect they have for each other. As the show enters its fourth season, Kripke relies heavily on Koyama’s creativity. While Kripke used to give detailed instructions on fight sequences in the early days, now he lets Koyama’s imagination run wild. However, the writers do throw some curveballs Koyama’s way, like in a sequence where The Boys have to fight the supe Splinter, who can clone himself, at a bat mitzvah—resulting in a scene with Splinter and his many clones ending up completely naked.
