Jodie Comer’s surprising realization after working with Ryan Reynolds
Jodie Comer recently opened up about a significant career realization she had after appearing in the Ryan Reynolds film Free Guy. Known for her roles in Killing Eve and Prima Facie on stage, Comer made her film debut in the action comedy in 2021.
Although she enjoyed her time on set and praised the team for being gentle, inclusive, and supportive, Comer shared that the experience made her realize something important about her career. She expressed, “It was my first film and I had the most amazing experience on that job – they were just the most gentle, inclusive, supportive people, and it was incredibly fun.” However, upon reflection, she discovered that she felt a lack of emotional depth in the role and a desire to stretch her acting abilities.
Comer explained, “But I realized when I was coming home, ‘Ah, there’s something I’m not feeling. I feel like I’m not stretching. Or not discovering.’ And I realized that it was the emotional part of it. I wasn’t exercising [that] part of myself.” She emphasized that finding those emotional depths is where she truly finds fulfillment as an actor.
Moving forward, Comer shared that she will be more selective about the projects she chooses to take on. She expressed, “If the instincts aren’t there, if I’m not excited by it, then I just don’t want to go near it because then I’m pulling from an artificial place. It feels almost dishonest with myself.”
Despite the success of Free Guy at the box office, Comer is set to star in the upcoming film 28 Years Later, a sequel to the post-apocalyptic horror movie 28 Days Later. Directed by Danny Boyle, the film also features Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jack O’Connell, and is the first installment in a planned trilogy of sequels.
Comer’s dedication to her craft and commitment to emotional depth in her performances continue to shape her career as she navigates the world of entertainment with authenticity and integrity.
