Bird Flu Outbreak in Kanpur Zoo: Baby Nilgai Dies Following Tiger, Peacock, and Surkhab
The situation at Kanpur Zoo in Uttar Pradesh is concerning, with a string of animal deaths causing alarm. From a tiger to a peacock, followed by a Surkhab bird, and now a baby Nilgai, the losses are troubling. While zoo officials claim improvement, recent events suggest otherwise.
On Friday evening, a baby Nilgai passed away in suspicious circumstances at the zoo. Administrative officers initially suggested it was a result of a fight between wild animals, but given the circumstances, they have sent a sample of the baby Nilgai for testing at the National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.
Kanpur Zoo’s director, Shraddha Yadav, confirmed the death of the baby Nilgai and mentioned that reports from samples sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly and the National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases Centre in Bhopal are pending. Continuous sanitization efforts are underway to protect the zoo’s wildlife.
The zoo has been closed to visitors until May 26 due to bird flu concerns. The outbreak began with the death of Babbar lion Pataudi, followed by a deceased peacock in the jungle safari area, and then the Surkhaab bird in the bird enclosure. The recent loss of the baby Nilgai has understandably heightened concerns within the zoo.
It’s a challenging time for Kanpur Zoo, but efforts are being made to address the situation and ensure the well-being of the animals. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
