Former Councilman Appointed to Fill Vacant Seat in WCCB Charlotte’s CW City Council

A familiar face is making a return to Charlotte City Council to fill the open seat left by Republican Tariq Bokhari. Edwin Peacock will be serving as the District 6 representative until the end of the year. After a split vote between council members, Peacock, a former councilman, was appointed to the open seat thanks to Mayor Vi Lyles breaking the tie.

Peacock expressed his dedication to making a positive impact and improving lives during his service on the council. Having previously served as an at-large council member from 2007 to 2011, he is still remembered as the last republican to hold that city-wide position. Peacock believes his past experience will come in handy for the upcoming tasks, especially with potential local issues like a transit referendum on the horizon.

This appointment marks the first time in recent memory where a council predominantly of democrats had to appoint a republican candidate. Despite the split vote, with some council members supporting Krista Bokhari, the wife of Tariq Bokhari, others felt that a former council member like Peacock had an edge due to their experience and ability to hit the ground running.

Peacock is stepping into his new role amidst a busy time for the council, as they are set to begin voting on a $3.6 billion budget later this month. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for May 20th at 2:30 pm at the Government Center. Despite the challenges ahead, Peacock is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work for the next six months, aiming to build strong relationships and focus on moving forward with his fellow council members.
