Former councilman appointed to fill vacant seat in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte City Council has a familiar face returning to represent District 6, as Edwin Peacock steps in to fill the seat previously held by Republican Tariq Bokhari. The decision came down to a tie between Peacock and Krista Bokhari, Tariq’s wife, but Mayor Vi Lyles ultimately broke the tie in favor of Peacock.

Peacock expressed his commitment to making a positive impact and improving lives during his time on the council. Having served as an at-large council member from 2007 to 2011, he is no stranger to the responsibilities of the position. Peacock sees the upcoming transit referendum as a key issue that he hopes to address during his time back on the council.

It’s worth noting that this appointment marks a unique situation where a council predominantly made up of democrats had to appoint a republican candidate. Despite support for Krista Bokhari from some council members, Peacock’s experience and readiness to hit the ground running won out in the end.

While not every council member voted in favor of Peacock, he is eager to work collaboratively and build strong relationships moving forward. With the $3.6 billion budget vote coming up soon, Peacock will have a full plate of responsibilities from the start. He will be sworn in at the Government Center on May 20th at 2:30 pm, ready to dive into the work ahead.
