Actor from ‘Ted Lasso’ makes U.S. professional soccer debut
Cristo Fernández, known for his role as Dani Rojas in the show “Ted Lasso,” has made his professional soccer debut with the USL Championship club El Paso Locomotive FC. The 35-year-old actor fulfilled a lifelong dream by entering the match as a late substitute in a 2-0 USL Cup loss to New Mexico United.
Millions of viewers associate Fernández with Rojas, the enthusiastic Mexican striker famous for saying, “Football is life!” The character quickly became a fan favorite during the Emmy Award-winning show’s three seasons due to his infectious energy and scoring ability.
Before pursuing acting, Fernández aspired to be a professional soccer player. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, he played in the youth system of Tecos FC before an injury dashed his hopes. Despite turning to acting, his passion for soccer remained strong.
Training with the Chicago Fire II earlier this year, Fernández worked his way to secure a contract with El Paso Locomotive. Speaking to ESPN, he emphasized the importance of proving himself on the field and the hard work that led him to this moment.
Fernández’s journey from the small screen to the soccer field is a testament to his dedication and determination to pursue his dreams. Fans can expect to see more of him on the pitch in the upcoming fourth season of “Ted Lasso.”
