Tyra Banks Sues Netflix for Defamation in ‘ANTM’ Documentary

Tyra Banks is taking Netflix to court over alleged misrepresentation in the docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. She claims that the producers manipulated her interview to create a false portrayal of her involvement in the popular show.

Court documents reveal that out of a 3.5-hour interview, only 16 minutes were used in the three-part documentary that aired on Netflix earlier this year. Banks insists that crucial parts of her interview where she addressed criticisms and held herself accountable for decisions were deliberately left out.

In a statement, Banks expressed her disappointment, stating that she had participated in the documentary to have an open discussion about the show’s legacy, both good and bad. However, she believes that the producers edited the footage selectively to construct a negative and inaccurate narrative about her.

At the heart of the legal battle are claims that the documentary implied Banks allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted during production and then later claimed to have no recollection of the incident. The incident in question involved former contestant Shandi Sullivan from Cycle 2 of America’s Next Top Model, who revisited an experience in Italy and labeled it as sexual assault.

However, Banks argues that the editing created the false impression that she couldn’t remember Sullivan’s story, when in reality, she acknowledged and remembered the incident. The lawsuit describes the implications as “devastating and deliberate,” painting Banks in a negative light.
