Send Help: My One Survivor-Related Gripe

I recently watched Send Help on Hulu, and I have to say, Sam Raimi’s island movie really delivered. I was particularly impressed by Rachel McAdams’ character, Linda, and her passion for Survivor. However, I couldn’t help but feel that the movie missed an opportunity by not exploring her Survivor fandom more throughout the film. Linda’s obsession with being on the show added an interesting layer to her character, but it felt a bit forgotten as the story progressed.

Send Help is a horror film at its core, but I wished it had leaned more into Linda’s Survivor obsession. After seeing her audition tape for the show, I expected her love for Survivor to play a bigger role in the story, especially when she’s stranded with Bradley. As a fan of Big Brother myself, I know how engaging and entertaining Survivor discussions can be, and I feel like Linda’s character could have been enhanced by incorporating more of that dynamic.

I even learned that the original script for Send Help had a Survivor moment planned for the end of the film. Screenwriters Mark Swift and Damian Shannon intended to include a cameo by Probst at a celebrity golf tournament scene, where he would interact with Linda. Unfortunately, due to Probst’s commitments with Survivor filming, the moment couldn’t come to fruition. It’s a shame that this fun connection to Survivor couldn’t be realized, but it’s interesting to see how these behind-the-scenes decisions can impact the final product.
