Free Streaming: The New Norm in TV Viewing
Streaming TV has become a new norm for many television viewers, with free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) gaining popularity among mainstream audiences. According to a recent survey by Hub Entertainment Research, a growing number of U.S. TV viewers are turning to FAST services, with about half of users considering it a “must-have” part of their weekly TV routine.
The survey, which included 3,009 U.S. TV consumers, revealed that 55% of respondents have tried at least one FAST service. Of those, 28% reported watching content every day. Interestingly, both FAST users and non-users watch a similar amount of TV per week, averaging around 24 hours.
While FAST users estimate spending about $75 per month on TV services, only slightly less than non-users who spend an average of $84, the majority (60%) see FAST as a complement to their paid services rather than a replacement. Additionally, 67% of FAST users find watching TV to be an important part of their lives, mirroring the sentiment among those who rely solely on paid TV sources.
When asked about the benefits of free streaming compared to other TV services, respondents highlighted the lack of cost as the primary advantage, followed by the depth of content available and the convenience of not needing to login. A significant number of users (33%) also appreciate how easy it is to discover new content on FAST platforms.
The rise of free streaming has blurred the lines between traditional TV and creator content, with platforms like YouTube gaining prominence among viewers. In fact, YouTube is now the most-watched streaming platform on TV sets, making it clear that creator content is an essential part of the entertainment diet for many viewers.
The study also found that a large percentage of FAST users are under the age of 35, indicating a younger demographic’s preference for free streaming services. Furthermore, many users express interest in trying new free streaming services that offer a mix of creator content and traditional shows and movies.
In conclusion, free streaming has become a bridge between traditional television and the creator economy, offering viewers a simple and unified platform to enjoy a variety of content. As streaming costs continue to rise, free streaming services are likely to keep gaining ground, shaping the future of TV entertainment.
