Disney+ Loses Dolby Vision and HDR10+ Support in Europe

Disney+ subscribers in certain European countries have hit a bit of a snag when it comes to enjoying the advanced HDR features like Dolby Vision, according to reports from TechRadar and FlatpanelsHD. The trouble was first brought to light by Disney+ users in Germany on Reddit, but it’s now affecting viewers in Portugal, Poland, France, and the Netherlands as well.

In a statement, Disney acknowledged the issue, explaining that Dolby Vision support for content on Disney+ is currently unavailable in several European countries due to technical challenges. The good news is that they’re actively working to fix this hiccup and get Dolby Vision back up and running as soon as possible. In the meantime, 4K UHD and HDR support are still accessible on supported devices.

Interestingly, it seems like the technical glitch might have some staying power. Disney has removed all mentions of Dolby Vision from its Disney+ video quality support page in Germany, replacing it with HDR10 as the default HDR format. Despite Dolby Vision being a staple feature of Disney+ for years, it looks like subscribers in Europe will have to make do without it for now.

On another note, FlatpanelsHD suggests that the issue could be more legal than technical. A company named InterDigital scored a win in a German court against Disney back in November 2025, claiming that Disney had infringed on one of its patents related to streaming video technology. Specifically, the court demanded that Disney stop violating InterDigital’s patent on overlaying one video stream with another, including subtitles. This legal tussle might offer some insight into why Dolby Vision suddenly disappeared for European viewers.

We’ve reached out to Disney for more information about the situation and whether InterDigital’s court order played a role in this HDR dilemma. As we wait for a response, it’s worth noting that mentions of Dolby Vision have also vanished from the US version of Disney+’s video quality support page. While InterDigital hasn’t secured a court order in the US, they are pursuing a similar patent case against Disney in the states. This development doesn’t necessarily mean US viewers will lose Dolby Vision support next, but it does point to a bigger picture beyond mere technical issues.
