WBD/Netflix Agreement Keeps AEW on HBO Max Until 2027/2028
All-Elite Wrestling fans can breathe easy knowing that the action-packed matches and drama will keep streaming on HBO Max through the end of the current deal. After that, rights are set to shift over to Discovery Networks, as reported by Tony Maglio in the Hollywood Reporter. The move will make Discovery Networks the new home for AEW shows like Dynamite and Collision that currently air on TNT and TBS.
A switch to a new Discovery app is on the horizon, per a plan set in motion following a split between Warner Bros. streaming and movie studios and their cable channels. With the pending completion of the spin-off, WBD revealed plans for a TNT Sports streaming app under the Discovery umbrella.
Back in 2024, AEW signed a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year, ensuring that the high-energy matches will continue on HBO Max until at least 2027 or 2028, pending Netflix/WBD’s decision to extend the contract. There’s even a chance for a nonexclusive deal where both HBO Max and Turner Sports could stream AEW events, so fans might have more viewing options in the future.
If Netflix completes its merger with WBD, sources have confirmed that the plan includes keeping HBO Max as a separate service. This strategic move would help in avoiding potential regulatory issues and could amp up the competition with YouTube.
It’s been noted that WBD holds a stake of less than 10 percent in AEW, and it’s likely that WWE and TKO have non-compete clauses with Netflix regarding other wrestling content on the platform. If HBO Max were to merge with Netflix, AEW content might make its way over to a Discovery streaming app.
Despite potential challenges, fans can rest assured that AEW will be available for streaming even with all the corporate shakeups. With mergers and legal battles on the horizon, only time will tell where AEW and its pulse-pounding matches will land next.
