UCLA Study Reveals Decline in Diversity in Streaming Shows

A recent study conducted by researchers at UCLA has revealed that there is a concerning lack of diversity among the cast and crew of streaming entertainment. The study found that despite the increasing popularity of streaming platforms, representation of minorities in both on-screen roles and behind-the-scenes positions has actually been on the decline.

According to the study, which analyzed data from over 32,000 TV episodes and films released on streaming services between 2019 and 2020, there has been a decrease in the percentage of women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community on screen. Additionally, there has been a decrease in the number of women and people of color working in key creative roles such as directors, writers, and producers.

These findings are particularly concerning given the growing influence of streaming platforms in the entertainment industry. As more and more viewers turn to streaming services for their entertainment needs, it is important that these platforms reflect the diversity of their audiences both in front of and behind the camera.

In order to address this lack of diversity, industry leaders and content creators need to prioritize inclusivity and representation in their programming. This includes actively seeking out and promoting diverse talent, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as creating opportunities for underrepresented groups to tell their own stories.

By taking steps to increase diversity and representation in streaming entertainment, the industry can help create a more inclusive and equitable media landscape for audiences of all backgrounds to enjoy.
