Netflix Adds Highly-Anticipated New Film to 2025 Lineup
Netflix recently added a new film that critics are calling one of the best of the year. Released on Friday (28 November), “Left-Handed Girl” is a family comedy drama that made a splash at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May.
Written and directed by Shih-Ching Tsou, known for collaborating with Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, the Taiwanese film follows a five-year-old girl, her sister, and their mother as they move from the countryside to Taipei and open a noodle shop in a night market. The film explores how they adjust to their new surroundings.
Critics have praised “Left-Handed Girl,” with Collider calling it “one of the best solo directing debuts of the year” and The Spectator noting its tender yet unsentimental portrayal. The Times highlighted the film’s rebellious spirit and mischief, particularly praising Nina Ye’s standout performance.
In an interview with Netflix, Tsou shared that the inspiration behind the film came from her experiences growing up in Taiwan, where she felt confined by tradition and expectations as a girl. She expressed that making “Left-Handed Girl” allowed her to reconnect with her past and share her story.
To capture the family dynamic authentically, Tsou opted for unique methods, such as drawing on cast members’ personal family experiences and maintaining a bit of distance between them to enhance natural tension on set.
“Left-Handed Girl” is now available for streaming on Netflix, offering a heartwarming and insightful look at family dynamics and personal growth.
