Streaming Platforms Push Broadcast Networks Down in Evolving Media Landscape

In July, two key milestones highlighted the shift in the media landscape, showing the declining influence of broadcast television. A significant factor in this change is the viewing habits of both younger and older audiences.

For the first time, viewers spent more time watching streaming services in June than they did on broadcast and cable television combined. This trend began in May, with a slight margin, but by June, the gap had widened significantly, according to Nielsen. Additionally, Fox News Channel attracted more prime-time viewers on weekdays than the major broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox entertainment.

The data from June indicated that 46% of Americans’ TV time was dedicated to streaming services, with YouTube and Netflix leading the pack. Cable networks made up 23.4% of viewing time, while broadcast television fell to 18.5%, totaling just under 42%. This marked the first time broadcast TV had dipped below 20% of total TV viewing.

Nielsen’s Senior Vice President, Brian Fuhrer, noted that this shift had been expected, but the pace at which it occurred surprised many. The surge in streaming consumption in June was driven by young viewers, as school holidays provided more time for binge-watching popular series like “Ginny & Georgia” and “Squid Game.”

In the previous year, conventional TV viewing surpassed streaming, with 47.7% of people tuning in versus 40.3% on streaming platforms. However, the momentum has clearly shifted towards streaming.

Despite the rise of streaming, Fuhrer emphasized that broadcast TV is not obsolete. The summer months of June and July typically see lower viewership, which is expected to rise with the return of football season and original programming.

Moreover, the media landscape is evolving to offer content across various platforms to cater to diverse viewer preferences. Platforms like YouTube, which serve as a gateway to traditional TV, have contributed to the growth of streaming services.

Fox News remained a stronghold in the industry, attracting 2.4 million prime-time viewers on weeknights in July. Despite being one of the oldest viewer demographics, Fox News sustains consistent viewership throughout the year.

In conclusion, streaming services have reshaped the media landscape, with broadcast television slipping to second place behind the growing dominance of digital platforms. The future of entertainment has undeniably arrived, offering viewers a wide array of content options across platforms.
