“Eenie Meanie Review: Samara Weaving Shines in Hulu’s Elmore Leonard-Inspired Film”
Everyone loves a good car chase movie, and “Eenie Meanie” is here to deliver some high-speed thrills. In this feature debut from writer/director Shawn Simmons, we meet Edith, expertly played by Samara Weaving. Edith is a former getaway driver attempting to clean up her act and move past her troubled ex-boyfriend John, portrayed by Karl Glusman, whose chaotic nature constantly pulls her back into a risky lifestyle.
The film takes viewers on a wild journey as Edith discovers she’s pregnant, setting off a series of events when John gets into deep trouble with a crime boss, played by Andy Garcia. As the story unfolds, we see the complexities of their relationship and the way love isn’t always the solution to problems—it can be the problem itself. Weaving and Glusman deliver strong performances that carry the emotional weight of the film.
While “Eenie Meanie” offers a mix of action, drama, and comedy, it may not be the most memorable crime film out there. The clever car chases and heist element add excitement, but ultimately, it’s the sincerity of the characters that keeps the story engaging. Although the dialogue strives for that “Pulp Fiction” cool factor, it sometimes falls flat, lacking the sharpness needed to elevate the material.
Simmons’ screenplay gives the characters depth, reminiscent of an Elmore Leonard novel adaptation, but it misses the mark on delivering that effortless style. The film could have used more car chases to up the ante, but the existing sequences are thrilling and well-executed. Overall, “Eenie Meanie” offers an entertaining mix of action and drama, with an intriguing cast of characters that keep the story moving forward.
