Nathan Fielder draws backlash for controversial comparison regarding Paramount+ decision
Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder recently found himself in hot water after an episode of his show, “Nathan for You,” was taken down from a streaming platform for addressing Holocaust denial. Known for his quirky humor, Fielder was not pleased when his comedic take on Holocaust denial was removed from the platform by Paramount+ Germany. In the episode, Fielder was shocked to discover that a Canadian company he liked had ties to a Holocaust denier, prompting him to start his own apparel line, Summit Ice, to raise awareness and funds for Holocaust education.
Fielder’s controversial episode prompted him to compare the actions of Paramount+ Germany executives to Nazis, a move that stirred up controversy and accusations of erasing Jewish narratives. Fielder’s frustration stemmed from what he perceived as a lack of representation of Jewish themes on the streaming platform, with 50 results for “Nazi,” 10 for “Hitler,” but none for “Judaism.”
In response to the removal of his episode, Fielder went to great lengths to promote Summit Ice, enlisting a rabbi to help market the brand with an attention-grabbing campaign that played on Holocaust imagery. Showing Summit Ice jackets set against a backdrop reminiscent of Auschwitz, complete with swastika banners, the campaign aimed to draw attention to the importance of Holocaust education and awareness.
The incident highlights the complexities of using sensitive historical topics in comedy and the challenges of navigating conversations around the Holocaust in popular media. While Fielder’s approach may have been provocative, it sparked a larger discussion about the portrayal of Jewish themes in entertainment and the responsibility of platforms to handle such content thoughtfully.
