MLS Teams Innovate to Bring Games to Linear TV During Apple Deal
MLS teams are getting creative to make sure their games reach a wider audience, despite the exclusive deal between MLS and Apple TV. While most games are only available on the Apple TV+ app, some teams are finding ways to broadcast their matches on traditional TV channels.
Just recently, FC Dallas announced a deal with local TV channel KDFI to show full matches on tape delay. This makes FC Dallas the second MLS team to strike such an agreement, following in the footsteps of Charlotte FC. Under the terms of the deal, matches will be shown two or three days after they’re played. Although Apple holds the exclusive live rights to MLS matches, local broadcasters can air games on tape delay as long as they wait at least 48 hours after the match.
These tape-delayed broadcasts give local MLS teams much-needed exposure on linear television. Many have criticized the Apple deal for keeping MLS games out of sight for fans. According to one MLS team executive, the league should reconsider the deal with Apple in favor of more traditional TV exposure.
While diehard fans may prefer live broadcasts, these tape-delayed games can still attract casual viewers who stumble upon their local team’s broadcast. The timeline of the delay also works well, with most matches scheduled on Saturday evenings. A 48-hour delay would mean these games air on Tuesday nights, a stronger night for TV viewing.
“We’re thrilled to team up with KDFI More 27 for this collaborative effort,” said Gina Miller, Vice President of Broadcasting for FC Dallas. “FC Dallas Rewind is a great way for fans in North Texas to connect with our team and follow every moment of the 2025 MLS season.”
Expect more MLS teams to follow suit and strike similar deals to gain more exposure on traditional TV platforms.
