South Park Season 27: Week-On, Week-Off Release Schedule Extends to December
Fans of South Park may need to wait a little longer for new episodes this fall. After the third episode of Season 27 aired on August 20, the show is taking a brief break, so there won’t be a new episode this week on Comedy Central or Paramount+.
The creators of South Park, Matt Stone, and Trey Parker, have decided to release episodes on a week-on, week-off basis for this season. The next new episode is set to air on September 3, followed by another on September 17. If everything goes as planned, this pattern will continue for the 10-episode season, leading all the way into December.
Season 27 kicked off on July 23 with “Sermon on the Mount” and has been diving into satirical takes on Donald Trump, religion, and even Satan. The show is known for quickly turning current events into cartoon storylines, which has made scheduling a bit more complicated this year.
A source close to the production shared that episodes are taking longer to finish because there’s just so much happening in the world. They said, “So much happens with Trump in just a single day that no one wants to miss the mark. Accuracy is the top priority, even if it means slowing down the release schedule.” The source also mentioned, “We’re not going to argue with success. The numbers are strong, the buzz is huge – if the creators want to stretch 10 episodes over 20 weeks, that works for us.”
The decision to space out the episodes follows a period of challenges behind the scenes. After legal battles and intense negotiations, South Park made a big deal with Paramount+ to secure its future. The show now has a five-year commitment for 50 new episodes, and all past seasons are exclusively available on Paramount+. This move has solidified South Park as a cornerstone of the streaming platform.
South Park Digital Studios, a collaboration between Parker, Stone, and Paramount, continues to oversee the show. David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, and Cindy Holland are leading Paramount+’s streaming strategy, ensuring that South Park remains a vital part of the platform alongside other hit franchises.
